What is Shingles?

Shingles is a painful, blistering skin rash caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus linked to chickenpox. It often follows the path of a nerve and may cause burning pain, tingling, itching, fatigue and sleep disruption

Common Signs:                                                          Triggers and Risk Factors:

1. Burning pain                                                           1. Aging

2. Blistering rash                                                        2. Stress

3. Tingling or sensitivity                                              3. Lowered immunity

4. Itching                                                                     4. Poor Sleep

5. Fatigue                                                                    5. Recovery after illness

6. Poor Sleep                                                              6. Physical or emotional exhaustion

7. Nerve discomfort

8. Emotional stress

Who Is More at Risk of Developing Shingles?

Anyone who has previously had chickenpox can develop shingles. The likelihood increases with age, particularly after age 50, and in people whose immune systems are weakened by illness, certain medications or other health conditions.

Recovery from illness and periods of significant physical strain may also affect a person's overall resilience and well-being.

A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) looks at symptoms within the context of the individual's overall pattern of health and well-being.Depending on the individual presentation, a TCM practitioner may consider patterns traditionally described as:

Damp-Heat in the Channels - In TCM terminology, heat and dampness may be associated with redness, swelling, burning sensations and skin eruptions.

Toxic Heat - Acute redness, inflammation and blistering may be interpreted within TCM as signs of excess heat.

Qi & Blood Stagnation - Persistent sensitivity or discomfort may be considered in relation to impaired movement of Qi and Blood within traditional Chinese medicine theory.

Underlying Deficiency - During recovery, treatment may focus more broadly on supporting rest, resilience and overall balance.

These descriptions reflect traditional Chinese medicine theory and are not Western medical diagnoses.

When to Seek Medical Care

If you think you may have shingles, contact a physician promptly. Prescription antiviral medications can shorten the severity and duration of shingles and work best when started early.

Seek prompt medical attention particularly if:

  • The rash is near or around your eye

  • You experience severe or rapidly worsening pain

  • You develop a high fever

  • The rash becomes widespread

  • You have a weakened immune system

  • Symptoms are rapidly worsening

Shingles affecting the face or eye can potentially cause serious complications, including vision problems.
